The Long Beach Public Library was founded in 1928 and had its first site at 124 West Park Avenue. The original site has been declared a landmark by the Long Beach Historical Society just above the popular Sutton Place Bar and Grill. in 2018 the owners of Sutton Place destroyed the original library. In 1959 Smith gave to the people of Long Beach a collection of rare books, some dating back to the 15th century. Included in the collection is a two volume facsimile of the Gutenberg Bible, all of which is housed as part of the Loraine and Earl Burns Miller Special Collections Room at the main branch of the Long Beach public library.

There was a Zaferia branch of the Long Beach Public Library at 3351 East Anaheim Street. [2] This branch was later known as either Zaferia or East Long Beach until the 1924 establishment of the "first East Long Beach branch building owned and built by the city" on Freeman Avenue. [3] Zaferia was annexed by Long Beach in 1920. [3]
