Government Polytechnic Nainital (previously known as Nainital Polytechnic Nainital) is a technical education institute located at Nainital, Uttarakhand. Established in 1975, the institute is affiliated from Uttarakhand Technical Education Board, Roorkee [ 1 ] and All India Council For Technical Education , New Delhi.
The Uttarakhand Public Service Commission has been constituted under the provisions of Article 315 of the Constitution of India by the Governor of Uttarakhand vide notification no. 247/1 Personnel 2001 dated 14 March 2001 (Annexure 1). The commission came into existence on 15 May 2001.
Later, three years Diploma in Electronics Engineering (1971), two years post-graduate Diploma in Computer Applications (1995) and three years Diploma in Mechanical (Automobile) Engineering (2008) courses were added to the course list of institute. Twenty students were additionally permitted to admit in second shift of each branch from 2008.

The polytechnic was named after the late Dato' Professor Ungku Omar Ahmad, in recognition of his valuable contributions to the nation, especially in the field of medical research. [2] For the first batch of 300 students, lectures were held beginning from 2 June 1969. At that time, the academic workforce consisted of 28 local lecturers.
