Nami (Japanese: ナミ, ), also known as "Cat Burglar" Nami, is a fictional character in the One Piece franchise created by Eiichiro Oda. She is based on Ann and Silk, two characters from Oda's previous manga Romance Dawn. She is introduced as a thief and pickpocket who possesses cartographical, meteorological, and navigational skills.
After Arlong informs Nezumi, a bribed Marine, of where Nami's earnings are hidden, the village riots against Arlong despite poor odds. After Nami tearfully asks Luffy for help, he and the remaining Straw Hats free the village by fighting and defeating the Arlong Pirates. After a days-long celebration, Nami re-joins the Straw Hat crew.
The Straw Hats attack Arlong Park, during which Buggy reclaims his body and flees. Realizing that Arlong's tower contains 8 years of Nami's painful memories, an enraged Luffy destroys the tower, crushes Arlong, and frees Coco village. Nezumi calls Garp to arrest the Straw Hats; Koby and Helmeppo refuse to arrest them, knowing they are innocent.
The battle spreads into Arlong Park itself and Arlong is no longer holding back. Luffy realizes that Nami was forced to draw charts for Arlong during eight years and becomes enraged. With one massive Gum-Gum Axe blow he defeats Arlong and destroys Arlong Park, freeding Nami and the village.
