The endophallus is held internally in the drone. During mating, the organ is everted (turned inside out), into the queen. The eversion of the endophallus is achieved by contracting abdominal muscles, which increases hemolymph pressure, effectively "inflating" the endophallus. Cornua claspers at the base of the endophallus help to grip the queen.
The genus Phallus, commonly known as stinkhorns, is a group of basidiomycetes which produce a phallic, often foul-scented mushroom, from which their name is derived. The genus has a widespread distribution and, according to a 2008 estimate, contains 18 species.
Male genitalia consist of an endophallus, aedeagus, and a copulatory piece. The copulatory piece is highly sclerotized and hook-like. It is attached to the dorsal wall of the endophallus. [1] The spermatophore, a hemispherical capsule that contains sperm, is deposited through an opening at the end of the endophallus called the gonopore. [2]
Endophallus(fungus) Zang & Petersen (1989) Contains a single species, E. yunnanensis found in China, that resembles Phallus except for a peridium that is separated from the base of the stem and which does not persist as a volva. [14] Ileodictyon Tul. ex M. Raoul (1844)
The endophallus is then everted from the aegeus into the vaginal appendix. The spermatophore emerges from the hook-like copulatory piece and is deposited in the vaginal apophysis. When the male body length is slightly smaller than that of the female, spermatophore deposition is more successful.
The endophallus of this rove beetle functions to both deposit sperm as well as remove rival sperm. The endophallus of the male will be inserted into the female’s genital chamber and wrapped around her spermathecal duct. This action forces the endophallus into a U-shape, filling the chamber and helping with the implantation of the spermatophore.
