I find it helps to remember the purpose of cost codes - 1: to help you measure your performance against the estimate made at bid time, (thus learning what went well and what did not) and 2: to help measure cost to complete (this feeds the over/underbilling entries for WIP).

My current setup has very general account codes for labor, subcontractors, tool rental, etc, similar to the NAHB chart of accounts. Reporting at this general level is great and necessary, but I'm looking at the NAHB cost codes and I would like to be able to generate financial reports on these more detailed work categories as well.
We're currently revisiting our budget / cost code structure for the Commercial Real Estate (CRE) side of our business as we're moving into a new ERP.

JC codes allow the equipment time to be entered through the equipment module to the job (this can also be done through their payroll module). To enter idle time you would just use a different cost code. EQ cost codes are used to record service and/or repairs through AP invoices or PR time sheets for mechanics.
