The series debuted with a made-for-TV movie simply titled The Rockford Files. During the series run, there were a number of two-part episodes, as well as long (90 or 120 minutes) episodes that were split into two parts for syndication (and on later DVD releases).
The Rockford Files is an American detective drama television series starring James Garner that aired on the NBC network from September 13, 1974, to January 10, 1980. Garner portrays Los Angeles private investigator Jim Rockford, with Noah Beery Jr. in the supporting role of his father, Joseph "Rocky" Rockford, a retired truck driver.
Angel (Stuart Margolin) flees to Rockford’s home when he witnesses a murder, but becomes a co-operative witness when promised police protection and 24-hour room service in a hotel. The murderer, Del Kane (Madison Arnold), is a connected hitman, and the judge at the preliminary hearing has been bribed to set Kane free.
When Rockford questions it his doubts are almost assuaged by the operating surgeon, the charming Dr. Lee Yost (John Considine). Still, Rockford wonders why Yost's organ clinic is a for-profit operation, and investigates further. Rockford's car develops a problem, which may have been an attempt to kill him.
Rockford is hired by his attorney, Beth (Gretchen Corbett), to investigate a murder for which another of her clients has been charged.The killers try to scare him off the case, and when he connects the murder to the lucrative film rights to a bestselling novel, they try to kill him.
An old prison buddy (Howard Duff) and his daughter (Joan Van Ark) trick Rockford into inadvertently setting up a mob-run poker game to get robbed. To get the money back Rockford co-opts their next con, involving the sale of a yacht they do not own. But Rockford only has a few days to make it work, and mobsters and crooks do not respect maritime ...

The sixth and final season of The Rockford Files originally aired Fridays at 9:00-10:00 pm on NBC from September 28 to December 14, 1979. The final episode originally aired Thursday, January 10, 1980. Garner returned to the character in eight television movies broadcast by CBS from 1994 to 1999.
