Mounted M. hochuanensis skeleton, Field Museum. Mamenchisaurus was first discovered in 1952 on the construction site of the Yitang Highway in Sichuan Province of China.The fossil site belonged to the Upper Shaximiao Formation, dating to at least the Late Jurassic. [1]
The family Mamenchisauridae was first erected by Chinese paleontologists Yang Zhongjian ("C.C. Young") and Zhao Xijin in 1972, in a paper describing Mamenchisaurus hochuanensis. [3] The most complete cladogram of Mamenchisauridae is presented by Moore et al., 2020, which includes several named species.
The Shaximiao Formation (simplified Chinese: 沙溪庙组; traditional Chinese: 沙溪廟組 / 沙溪廟層; pinyin: Shāxīmiào zǔ) is a Middle to Late Jurassic aged geological formation in Sichuan, China, most notable for the wealth of dinosaurs fossils that have been excavated from its strata.

The largest exhibit is a 140-million-year-old dinosaur skeleton of Mamenchisaurus hochuanensis Young et Zhao from Sichuan Province, which is over four stories high. The museum also has two mummies and several human embryos. [2]
