Lily C.A.T. (リリィ・キャット) is a 1987 cosmic horror anime film written and directed by Hisayuki Toriumi, featuring monster designs from Yoshitaka Amano and character designs from Yasuomi Umetsu. An English version of the film was produced by Carl Macek and distributed by Streamline Pictures.
A young sea-treasure hunter named Lily and her Dad live in a beach hut on an otherwise deserted beach. They give the impression of a family living 'off grid' with their patched clothes and Dad's plain look - their transport is an old van, and Lily having only a seagull for friendship and most of her toys composed of 'sea treasure' found on the beach.
It is a large creature, depicted as a grinning male cat with a hollow body that serves as a bus, complete with windows and seats coated with fur, and a large bushy tail. The character's popularity has led to its use in a spin-off film, toys for children, an art car, and being featured in the Ghibli Museum, among other products and influences.
From Series 2 onwards, the sketches involve drawings created with a magic pen which bring his many drawings to life. This is performed in the style of Maurice Minor sketches in Kenny Everett's shows and the cartoon Penny Crayon.
