This area is home to many hiking, biking, and equestrian trails with several established campgrounds. Tibble Fork Reservoir and Silver Lake Flats Reservoir are popular camping and fishing spots in the summer as well as offering excellent snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and backcountry skiing during the winter months.

It consists of two reservoirs: Folsom and Natoma. About 2 million people visit the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area every year. Generally, Folsom Lake State Recreation Area experiences hot summers and mild winters. Campgrounds in the area consist of the Peninsula Campground, Beals Point Campground, Negro Bar, and Avery's Pond.
The campground adjacent to the lake is under the white fir, cedar, and sugar pine trees. Pinecrest Lake is the last in a series of dams constructed on the South Fork of the Stanislaus River. In the beginning the purpose was to divert water via ditches and flumes to the mining claims in and around Columbia and the foothills.
Pine Flats, Mountain View, Park Creek, Helende and Bonneville campgrounds are open and require reservations. Little Deadwood Campground is the only open site that does not require reservations.
The Granite Chief Wilderness is a 19,048 acre (77 km 2) federally designated wilderness area of the Tahoe National Forest. Created by the California Wilderness Act of 1984 , [ 1 ] it is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains west of Lake Tahoe in the U.S. state of California.

The most recent large slide occurred on May 30, 1983. The slide ran immediately into Price Lake in a small valley halfway down the mountain. The resulting slurry of granite sand, granite rock, and forest debris flowed freely down the canyon below Price Lake, and ran out on the flat floor of Washoe Valley.
