According to the United States, the air-launched (YJ-12) and ship-launched (YJ-12A) variants have 270 nmi (310 mi; 500 km) ranges. [4] [5] Speeds of Mach 2.5 [3] to 4 [1] have been reported. The YJ-12 may perform evasive maneuvers to avoid anti-missile threats. [7] According to War on the Rocks, a ship has 45 seconds to engage a YJ-12 after sea ...

The YJ-83 uses microprocessors and a strap-down inertial reference unit (IRU); these are more compact than the equivalent electronics used in the YJ-8 and the export C-802, allowing the YJ-83 to have a 180-km range at Mach 0.9. The missile is powered by the Chinese CTJ-2 turbojet and is fitted with a 190-kg high-explosive fragmentation warhead.
The YJ-83 missile was introduced in the 1990s, giving a large boost in range. The even rangier YJ-62 was introduced in 2005. In 2008 the "Coastal Thunderbolt 1st Regiment" was established, which was the first fully mobile anti-ship unit, capable of deploying in unprepared positions and of operating in hostile electromagnetic environments. The latest variant is the YJ-83, with a range exceeding 250 km, and capable of making its final approach at Mach 1.5 to penetrate ship defenses. In addition, a variant revealed at 2006 Zhuhai Airshow designated as C-802KD/YJ-82KD has ground attack capabilities similar to the AGM-84 SLAM. All YJ8 models can be launched from a common boxed launcher.
The YJ-82 was first test fired from a Type 039 submarine in 1997; initial tests did not go well. The first photographs of the missile appeared at the 2004 China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition. [2] The YJ-82 was often erroneously referred to in the West as C-801Q or YJ-8Q, implying an export version of YJ-82.
