Rutland Regional Medical Center is the second largest hospital and the largest community hospital in Vermont. Located in Rutland, Vermont, it opened in 1896. [1] [2] Rutland Hospital officially opened on September 6, 1896, with four physicians and ten beds. Major renovations and additions were completed in 1956 and 1989.
Merged with the Kerbs Memorial Hospital also in St. Albans in 1978 and formed the Northwestern Medical Center. However, the St. Albans Hospital remained open until 1996 when it was completely consolidated with the Northwestern Medical Center and the building was purchased by Bellows Free Academy for one dollar, plus the cost of land. 1891: 2011
Rutland is the only city in and the seat of Rutland County, Vermont, United States. [4] [5] As of the 2020 census, the city had a total population of 15,807. [6]It is located approximately 65 miles (105 km) north of the Massachusetts state line, 35 miles (56 km) west of New Hampshire state line, and 20 miles (32 km) east of the New York state line.
Ambulance services are provided by Benson First Response and the Fair Haven Rescue Squad. The nearest hospitals are Rutland Regional Medical Center and Middlebury's historic Porter Hospital. Benson also operates a small, entirely volunteer fire department, who respond to more motor vehicle crashes then fires.

The Rutland Heights State Hospital was a state sanatorium for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis located in Rutland, Massachusetts, built for the purpose of treating Tuberculosis patients. The facility was the first state-operated sanatorium in the United States, opening in 1898 and operating for around 93 years before its closure in 1991.
