This is a list of the National Natural Landmarks (NNLs) in West Virginia. There are sixteen in all — five are wetlands (such as bogs and swamps), three are forests , six are limestone caves / karst , and two are rock formations.
The total area protected by national parks is approximately 52.4 million acres (212,000 km 2), for an average of 833 thousand acres (3,370 km 2) but a median of only 220 thousand acres (890 km 2). [8] The national parks set a visitation record in 2021, with more than 92 million visitors. [9]
West Virginia contains a network of eight state forests that help to protect over 70,000 acres (28,000 ha) of wooded lands in the state. Most of the forests are managed by the West Virginia Division of Forestry , although Kanawha State Forest is managed as a state park by the Division of Natural Resources .
