Megantereon is an extinct genus of prehistoric machairodontine saber-toothed cat that lived in Eurasia, Africa and possibly North America from the late Pliocene to the Middle Pleistocene. It is a member of the tribe Smilodontini, and closely related to and possibly the ancestor of the famous American sabertooth Smilodon.
Neanderthals became extinct around 40,000 years ago. Hypotheses on the causes of the extinction include violence, transmission of diseases from modern humans which Neanderthals had no immunity to, competitive replacement, extinction by interbreeding with early modern human populations, natural catastrophes, climate change and inbreeding depression.
Scientists, however, have found it surprisingly hard to piece together gene flow in the opposite direction: how intermingling between the two groups may have shaped Neanderthals, who went extinct ...
Cro-Magnons are also portrayed interacting with Neanderthals, such as in J.-H. Rosny's 1911 Quest for Fire, H. G. Wells' 1927 The Grisly Folk, William Golding's 1955 The Inheritors, Björn Kurtén's 1978 Dance of the Tiger, Jean M. Auel's 1980 Clan of the Cave Bear and her Earth's Children series, and Elizabeth Marshall Thomas' 1987 Reindeer ...
The fossilized remains of a Neanderthal discovered in a cave in southern France shed fresh light on why the ancient humans may have disappeared 40,000 years ago.
A big question plaguing paleoanthropologists - that is, people who study ancient humans - is just when did Neanderthals disappear? Most thought our early human ancestors went extinct about 30,000 ...
Cave bears may have greatly competed with Neanderthals for cave space, [215] and there is a decline in cave bear populations starting 50,000 years ago onwards (although their extinction occurred well after Neanderthals had died out). [216] [217] Neanderthals also had a preference for caves whose openings faced towards the south. [218]
The genome of a Neanderthal named Thorin suggested he was part of an unknown lineage. He and his community stayed isolated for 50,000 years.
