Siam station is one of four BTS stations utilising an island platform, the other being Samrong, Wat Phra Sri Mahathat and Ha Yaek Lat Phrao, and is the only station on the Silom line to feature an island platform. At Siam, this is to facilitate transfer between lines.

The opening of Siam Paragon Mall in 2004, at the time Thailand's most luxurious mall, boosted crowds at the system's central Siam station. The redevelopment of the Ratchaprasong and Siam districts as well as new "skywalks" fostered growing accessibility.
The station is located on Rama I Road to the west of Pathum Wan intersection, where the National Stadium, MBK Center, Siam Discovery Center, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre and Siam Square are situated and all linked to the station by skybridge. It is also within walking distance of Siam Center and Siam Paragon, which are located at Siam station.

Instead of turning left at the Silom-Naradhiwas junction, the line went straight. After exiting BTS S4 station, the line turned left at the Surasak junction, then right at the Sathorn-Surasak junction, continuing for 500 meters and terminating at BTS S5 station. The depot for both lines was initially located at Lumphini Park.
