Stevia (/ ˈ s t iː v i ə, ˈ s t ɛ v i ə /) [1] [2] is a sweet sugar substitute that is about 50 to 300 times sweeter than sugar. [3] It is extracted from the leaves of Stevia rebaudiana, a plant native to areas of Paraguay and Brazil. [4] [5] The active compounds in stevia are steviol glycosides (mainly stevioside and rebaudioside).
Truvia (also shown as truvía) is a brand of stevia-based sugar substitute developed jointly by The Coca-Cola Company and Cargill. It is distributed and marketed by Cargill as a tabletop sweetener as well as a food ingredient. [1] Truvia is made of stevia leaf extract, erythritol, and natural flavors.
A sugar substitute is a food additive that provides a sweetness like that of sugar while containing significantly less food energy than sugar-based sweeteners, making it a zero-calorie (non-nutritive) [2] or low-calorie sweetener. Sugar substitute products are commercially available in various forms, such as small pills, powders and packets.
Common non-sugar sweeteners that you may be familiar with include acesulfame K, aspartame, advantame, cyclamates, neotame, saccharin, sucralose, stevia and stevia derivatives.
Steviol glycosides do not induce a glycemic response when ingested, because humans cannot metabolize stevia. [4] [5] The acceptable daily intake (ADI) for steviol glycosides, expressed as steviol equivalents, has been established to be 4 mg/kg body weight/day, and is based on no observed effects of a 100 fold higher dose in a rat study. [6]
Switching to regular sugar isn’t necessarily the answer either. Oen-Hsiao notes that excess consumption of sugar can lead to diabetes, which also increases risk of cardiovascular events.
