The City was established on 1 July 1948 as the Shoalhaven Shire, following the amalgamation of the Municipalities of Nowra, Berry, Broughton's Vale, Ulladulla, South Shoalhaven, and the shires of Cambewarra and Clyde. [3] The Governor of NSW on 13 July 1979 proclaimed Shoalhaven as a city.
The Shoalhaven coast wine festival takes place on every June long weekend. It is a festival established to celebrate everything wine. [6] Thousands of visitors come to the region to stay for three days for exciting live music, fine food, winemaker's dinners, wine education talks, vineyard tours, market stalls etc.

The Illawarra Steam Navigation Company serviced the South Coast and Illawarra by ship transporting passengers and goods from the 1850s to the 1950s.. The NSW TrainLink Illawarra railway line services Berry before it terminates at Bomaderry, situated approximately 123 km south of Sydney on the northern side of the Shoalhaven River.
It is located in the City of Shoalhaven on the Princes Highway about 30 kilometres south of Nowra. [2] [3] Wandandian was first established as a Postal District in 1860, and has a rich history. The village takes its name from the Wandandian people, the traditional owners of much of the land now known as the City of Shoalhaven.
The Shoalhaven Regional Gallery collection was established over 40 years ago and includes works by important Australian artists. There is a strong regional and Shoalhaven representation which includes late colonial watercolours, oils and photographs of the Shoalhaven area by Samuel Elyard. [3]
