By the early 1880s, settlers came to the area in large numbers. They found that the trees in the nearby mountains provided lumbering materials for building as well as employment for the growing communities in the area. By December 1945, the property was operating as the Hacienda del Sol Ranch Hotel. [6] The same rooms previously used by students were converted into guest quarters. [7] In 1946, the ranch was used as a shooting location for Duel in the Sun starring Gregory Peck and Jennifer Jones. [2]
The house is the former residence of Harry E. Pierce. Pierce served as County Assessor during the 1920s, was secretary to Governor John C. Phillips from 1929 until 1932, and was chairperson of the Maricopa County Republican Central Committee. In addition to his political activities, Pierce was a partner in the real estate firm of Jacobs & Pierce.
After Arizona achieved statehood in 1912, Safford was chosen as the location for Graham's county seat in a 1915 election, moving it four miles west from Solomonville, the county seat since 1883. [2] A$50,000 bond was authorized to finance construction of a courthouse with courtrooms, offices, and jail.
