The Coalsack Nebula and the galactic area surrounding it played a large role in Jerry Pournelle's CoDominium Universe, particularly The Mote in God's Eye and the sequel The Gripping Hand, both co-authored with Larry Niven. In these novels, a human-colonized system, New Caledonia, is on the opposite side of the Coalsack from Earth.

The Coalsack Nebula lies partially within Crux and partly in the neighboring constellations of Musca and Centaurus. [3] It is the most prominent dark nebula in the skies, and is easily visible to the naked eye as a prominent dark patch in the southern Milky Way. It can be found 6.5° southeast from the centre of Crux or 3° east from α Crucis.
The closest and largest dark nebulae are visible to the naked eye, since they are the least obscured by stars in between Earth and the nebula, and because they have the largest angular size, appearing as dark patches against the brighter background of the Milky Way like the Coalsack Nebula and the Great Rift.

DALLAS (AP) — NASA’s Webb Space Telescope has revealed the sharpest images yet of a portion of a horse-shaped nebula, showing the “mane” in finer detail. The Horsehead Nebula, in the constellation Orion, is 1,300 light-years away. A light-year is nearly 6 trillion miles (9.7 trillion kilometers).
