Habil Khorakiwala is the founder and Chairman of Indian multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology company Wockhardt. [1] He founded Wockhardt in 1967, [2] which since then has grown into one of the top Indian makers of generic drugs, formulations, biopharmaceuticals, nutrition products, vaccines, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and a chain of advanced Super Speciality Hospitals.
Wockhardt Hospitals started its first operations with a medical center in Kolkata in 1989 and a heart hospital in Bangalore two years later. The company was incorporated on 28 August 1991 under the Companies Act, 1956 as a public limited company, originally named First Hospitals and Heart Institute Limited. [7]
From 2000 until his death, he was the chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia. [2] He was a well-known Indian businessman, and founded the Akbarallys group of departmental stores in Mumbai . [ 1 ] [ 3 ] He acquired Worli Chemical Works which later was incorporated as Wockhardt Ltd, becoming India's 5th largest pharmaceutical company.
