By 1925 the booming town enjoyed high agricultural demand and provided a hotel, bank, and elementary and high schools. The federal government condemned Hanford to make way for the Hanford Site. Residents were given a thirty-day eviction notice on March 9, 1943. [4] Most buildings were razed, with the exception of the former Hanford High School.
Richland School District #400 serves the cities of Richland and West Richland, Washington. As of 2020, it serves approximately 13,900 students in grades pre-kindergarten through grade 12. The school district operates a total of 21 schools, including elementary, middle, and high schools.
The high school, built in 1972, was originally part of a K-12 complex, which included an elementary and junior high (later a middle school). The elementary school was closed in the mid-1980s due to school district budget cuts, and the middle school was closed in 2005 when Enterprise Middle School was opened in West Richland in the same year.
As of 2009-2010, KBSD offers Band for 5th grade-8th grade, and Choir for 7th and 8th grade at the Middle School. At the High School, the offerings expand. KBHS currently has one Band, 3 Choirs (Mixed Choir known as "The Ursa Major Chorus", Treble Choir, an a cappella group known as "The Royales"), and Drama classes.
The Pioneer district is one of the oldest in the area. According to records at the Hanford Carnegie Museum, Pioneer School was started on Aug. 5, 1870. Back then, it was a two-story building with a belfry. Pioneer originally served the rural area of Grangeville, but now serves from the edge of Lemoore to Hanford.
