The SD40R is a rebuilt of all the Southern Pacific's SD40 between 1980 and 1981. [1] 30 SD40 units have been rebuilt as SD40M-2 by Morrison Knudsen for Southern Pacific, alongside 97 SD45s and 6 SDP45s. [2] The SD40-2XR designates 15 SD40 and a SDP40 rebuilt to Dash-2 standards for Montana Rail Link. [3] [better source needed] [4]
The SD40T-2 is a model of diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division in the United States. The SD40T-2 is equipped with a 16-cylinder EMD 645E3 diesel engine producing 3,000 horsepower (2,240 kW). 312 SD40T-2s were built for three railroads in the United States between April 1974 and July 1980.
These in turn were replaced in 2004 by the current fleet (as of February 2021) of seven EMD SD40-2 and EMD SD40T-2 locomotives, all of which remain in the faded color schemes of their former owners, Union Pacific and Southern Pacific. [4] At least one EMD SW1200 switcher is also on the roster. [5]
