Australia–Nepal relations refers to foreign relations between Australia and Nepal. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] Australia has an embassy in Kathmandu , and Nepal has an embassy in Canberra . Australia–Nepal relations were officially established on 15 February 1960.
The Australian Embassy in Kathmandu was opened on 27 April 1984, and the first ambassador appointed in May 1986. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] According to the Australian Government, the diplomatic mission was opened to improve consular services for Australians in Nepal and to facilitate the delivery of the Australian aid program to the country.
The Nepalese Ministry of Foreign Affairs rapidly expanded in the 1950s and 1960s, driven by Nepal's precarious strategic position sandwiched between India and China. As of 2022, Nepal's diplomatic network consists of 31 embassies, 7 consulates-general, and 2 permanent missions.

The Australian legation opened in January 1943 (the first Minister, Bill Slater was appointed in October 1942) in the temporary Russian capital of Kuybyshev and the Soviet embassy in Canberra also opened in March 1943. By the war's end the legation moved to Moscow and on 16 February 1948 was upgraded to an embassy.
Prior to the establishment of a resident embassy in Rome in 2008, on occasions the position has also had non-resident accreditation as Australia's Ambassador to the Holy See.
