Prior to American settlement of the area, the site of Great Bend was located in the northern reaches of Kiowa territory. [6] Claimed first by France as part of Louisiana and later acquired by the United States with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, it lay within the area organized by the U.S. as Kansas Territory in 1854.
Great Bend was founded in 1888 on land homesteaded by George Worner (1855 – 1950), [6] who was born in Germany and moved to Brandenburg Township in 1874 when his family moved there from Wisconsin. [7]

In 2002, the U.S. Navy initiated a program to develop the first of a fleet of littoral combat ships. [10] The Navy initially ordered two monohull ships from Lockheed Martin, which became known as the Freedom-class littoral combat ships after the first ship of the class, USS Freedom.
Capt. Theodore C. Reid, post engineer, was the first officer to report for duty on the base. He arrived on 18 January 1943. The first enlisted men to arrive, detachments of the 501st Base Headquarters and Air Base Squadron, the 1159th Guard Squadron, and the 902d Quartermaster Company, were necessarily housed in Great Bend for a time, there being no facilities on the base.
The Barton County Courthouse, located at 1400 Main Street in Great Bend, is the seat of government of Barton County, Kansas.Great Bend has been the county seat since 1867.
Great Bend High School was established early in the 20th century in order to help educate the growing population of Great Bend, Kansas. Shortly after the school was founded, the Panther was chosen as the official school mascot and students voted to implement red and black as the school colors.
In World War II the facility was Great Bend Army Airfield and was used for United States Army Air Forces Second Air Force training. It was one of the first B-29 Superfortress bases, used to organize XXI Bomber Command before it deployed to the Western Pacific in 1944.
