The British Association of Social Workers (BASW) is the largest professional association of registered social workers in the United Kingdom. [1] The association has a members' code of ethics that outlines best social work practice and works to support social workers and care managers through education and resources.
The National Institute for Social Work Training was set up in 1961, following proposals put forward in the 1959 Eileen Younghusband report for an independent staff college for social work. [1] Its initial funding was assured for ten years by the Nuffield Foundation and the Joseph Rowntree Memorial Trust.
National Diplomas scores are given as Pass, Merit and Distinction; a Distinction* grade may be given to excellent work. [9] The title National Diploma is used in a variety of ways. Most National Diplomas are further education qualifications rated at level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework, but some are at levels 4 and 5 (higher education).
