John 3:16 is the sixteenth verse in the third chapter of the Gospel of John, one of the four gospels in the New Testament. It is one of the most popular verses from the Bible and is a summary of one of Christianity's central doctrines—the relationship between the Father (God) and the Son of God (Jesus) .
"Although John 3:16 famously declares that one is saved by believing in the Son, the subsequent verses, particularly John 3:17 [25], delve deeper into the reasons behind this belief, suggesting that it is fundamentally a matter of the heart's affections, loving darkness rather than light. Some versions, including pre-KJV versions such as the Tyndale Bible, the Geneva Bible, and the Bishops Bible, treat the italicized words as a complete verse and numbered as 12:18, with similar words. In several modern versions, this is treated as a continuation of 12:17 or as a complete verse numbered 12:18:
Book chapter 1 –chapter 2 for a range of chapters (John 1–3); book chapter:verse for a single verse (John 3:16); book chapter:verse 1 –verse 2 for a range of verses (John 3:16–17); book chapter:verse 1,verse 2 for multiple disjoint verses (John 6:14, 44). The range delimiter is an en-dash, and there are no spaces on either side of it. [3]
The Gospel of John, like all the gospels, is anonymous. [14] John 21:22 [15] references a disciple whom Jesus loved and John 21:24–25 [16] says: "This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true". [11]
The New International Version (NIV) is a translation of the Bible into contemporary English. Published by Biblica, the complete NIV was released on October 27, 1978 [6] with a minor revision in 1984 and a major revision in 2011. The NIV relies on recently-published critical editions of the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts. [1] [2]
John 16 is the sixteenth chapter of the Gospel of John in the New Testament of the Christian Bible. It records Jesus' continued Farewell Discourse to his disciples, set on the last night before his crucifixion. In this chapter, Jesus speaks about the work of the Holy Spirit, the joy of the believers and his victory over the world. [1]
Ubiquitous are signs/notes with "John 3:16" on them. I don't think I've ever seen a sign/note saying "John 3:16-18." The Bible is all about context, so no verse stands on its own, but John 3:16 is often used as a encapsulated message that sums up the Gospel succinctly, and accurately, if maybe a bit simplistically.
