Established in January 1980, the All Ordinaries (XAO) (colloquially known as the "All Ords"; also known as the All Ordinaries Index, AOI) is the oldest index of shares in Australia. It is made up of the share prices for 500 of the largest companies listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). [ 2 ]
The ASX 200 was started on 31 March 2000 with a value of 3133.3, [3] equal to the value of the All Ordinaries at that date. The ASX 200 reached 6,000 points for the first time on Thursday 15 February 2007. [4] On 22 December 2017, the ASX 200 was 6,069. [5] The ASX 200 crossed the 7,000 points level for the first time on 16 January 2020. [6]
Today, ASX has an average daily turnover of A$4.685 billion and a market capitalisation of around A$1.6 trillion, making it one of the world's top 20 listed exchange groups, and the largest in the southern hemisphere. ASX Clear is the clearing house for all shares, structured products, warrants and ASX Equity Derivatives.
The organisation changed its name to Macquarie Goodman Group in 2005 following a series of acquisitions and mergers, which made it the largest industrial property group in the ASX All Ordinaries Index. [4] In July 2007, the organisation was renamed to its present name, after Macquarie Bank sold its 7.7% interest almost a year earlier. [5]

On 29 July 1996, Macquarie Bank Limited listed on the Australian Securities Exchange ASX: MQG. [16] By 30 October 1996 Macquarie had entered the ASX All Ordinaries Index, with a market capitalisation of approximately A$1.3 billion and would grow to more than A$35 billion in 2018 [17] to become one of Australia's largest listed companies.
