Route 4 is an 18.6-mile (29.9 km) partial ring road located in Charlotte, North Carolina.Beginning and ending at Interstate 85 (I-85), it loops south around Uptown Charlotte along state-maintained secondary roads, connecting the Charlotte Douglas International Airport and several city neighborhoods including Madison Park, Myers Park, Windsor Park and Sugar Creek.
The first NC 51 was an original state highway that traveled from NC 20, in Rockingham, to NC 74, in Wadeville. [3] In 1928, Rockingham to Ellerbe became an extension of NC 75 . [ 4 ] In 1934, NC 51 was decommissioned in favor of NC 73 , between Ellerbe and Mount Gilead , and NC 109 , between Mount Gilead and Wadeville.
1930s: NC 24 is rerouted numerous times after the introduction of new U.S. Highways to North Carolina. 1941: NC 24 west of Fayetteville is truncated; NC 87 and NC 78 take control of the truncated route. 1963: The western terminus of NC 24 is moved and extended to Charlotte; this produced the 106-mile (171 km) concurrency with NC 27.
In 1975, the freeway US 19 traversed was extended from Weaverville to Mars Hill. In 1979, US 19 bypassed Andrews; US 19 Bus. replaced the old route. In 1980, US 19 bypassed Murphy; US 19 Bus. replaced the old route. In 1984, US 19 was realigned in Yancey County to its current routing and US 19W was extended 0.4 miles (0.64 km) south. [5]
The route ends at the exit 11 interchange on I-77/US 21, with NC 16 (Brookshire Freeway/Boulevard) continuing northwesterly towards I-85. I-277 is signed both north–south and with inner–outer directions. Lane counts vary from six to eight, with a posted speed limit mostly throughout at 50 mph (80 km/h).
