Fact: Some people poop once a day — or even a few times a day. A recent Healthline survey found that about 50 percent of people poop on a daily basis. But what if you don’t?
How often should you poop? “Normal is anywhere from every day to every three days,” says Rudolph Bedford, M.D., gastroenterologist at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA.
The study found the ideal number of bowel movements for optimal health was one or two a day. Younger people, women and those with lower BMIs tended to poop less frequently.
Constipation is a bowel dysfunction that makes bowel movements infrequent or hard to pass. [2] The stool is often hard and dry. [4] Other symptoms may include abdominal pain, bloating, and feeling as if one has not completely passed the bowel movement. [3]
The researchers specifically studied the participants’ poop, took blood samples, and had participants answer questions about what they ate, how often they exercised, and their stress levels.
Fats in feces can be measured over a defined time (often five days). [14] Other tests include the (13)C-mixed triglycerides test and fecal elastase , to detect possible fat maldigestion due to exocrine pancreatic insufficiency , [ 14 ] or various specific tests to detect other causes of malabsorption such as celiac disease .
