The Buffalo Peaks Wilderness is a U.S. Wilderness Area located in San Isabel and Pike National Forests in central Colorado.The 43,410-acre (175.7 km 2) wilderness was named after two highly eroded volcanic mountains, East Buffalo Peak and West Buffalo Peak, in the Mosquito Range and was established in 1993.
These byways follow existing roads or highways and are signed with a Colorado blue columbine (the Colorado state flower) logo denoting the route. The Colorado Scenic and Historic Byways Program was established in March 1989, and is one of the oldest state scenic byway programs.
Buffalo Mountain is set in the Gore Range which is a subrange of the Rocky Mountains. The mountain is located 3.5 miles (5.6 km) northwest of the community of Frisco in the Eagles Nest Wilderness on land managed by White River National Forest.
