The Debtors' Prison in Tappahannock, Virginia, is a historic debtors' prison dating back to the 18th century. Constructed sometime before 1769, it is one of three such structures remaining in Virginia, along with those in Accomac [3] and Worsham. [4]

The Tappahannock Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. [15] On February 24, 2016, the town was hit by a large EF3 tornado, causing massive damage. [16] On July 15, 2022, a fire destroyed many businesses along Prince Street as well as multiple homes in downtown Tappahannock, burning nearly half the town block.
In 1927, the house was sold to Episcopal Diocese of Virginia for the St. Margaret's School in Tappahannock. It has been used as housing for students and staff. It has also been used as an infirmary. [4] The house was restored in 2004 and 2005. It is the Head of School residence and serves as the Alumnae House. [3] [4]
