Times Square–42nd Street/Port Authority Bus Terminal: Times Square: IRT 42nd Street Shuttle S At Times Square, a number of passageways connect the IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line, IRT Flushing Line, IRT 42nd Street Shuttle, and BMT Broadway Line. A block-long passageway west to the IND Eighth Avenue Line is also inside fare control.
The station opened on September 9, 1932, as part of the initial section of the Eighth Avenue Line. The connection to the Port Authority Bus Terminal opened in 1950, and a platform on a lower level operated intermittently between 1952 and 1981. A free transfer to the Times Square station opened in 1988.
A transfer to the 42nd Street Shuttle at Times Square was built as part of the 2015–2019 MTA Capital Program. A new platform for the shuttle, which would be 28 feet (8.5 m) wide and located between Tracks 1 and 4 (the outer tracks of the shuttle tunnel), replaced the existing curved platforms for tracks 1, 3, and 4.
The New York Times lauded the plan, stating that "the Times Square–Grand Central subway shuttle was an atrocity from the beginning and has had no substantial improvement in a third of a century." [ 36 ] Bids on the structure to accommodate the conveyor, which was expected to cost $1.1 million, were to be received on December 10, 1954. [ 37 ]
