Pleasant Garden is situated south of Greensboro, west of Forest Oaks, and north of Climax. It is bordered both east and west by U.S. Route 421 and Old U.S. Highway 220 (Randleman Road) (Respectively), and to the north by Interstate 85.
The land for the Pleasant Gardens estate was purchased by Hunting John McDowell, Joseph McDowell's father, in 1768. The land was originally located in Anson County until 1753, when it became Rowan County and became part of Burke County in 1777. Joseph McDowell was born on February 25, 1758, before his father purchased the Pleasant Gardens estate.
In 1967, Ian and Dick Garden assumed control of the circus. Subsequently, Dick pursued his own shows, while Ian continued the indoor Garden Bros tour throughout eastern Canada. [17] In 1990, Ian passed the reins of Garden Bros Circus to his sons, Richard and Ian Jr., who carried on the circus tradition until approximately 2010.

Tilby and Forbis experimented with several styles and techniques before discovering the video printer which captures and print video frames (3x4 inches) onto thermal paper. Their technique was to shoot footage with a hi-8 camera enlisting themselves and friends as actors. Selected frames were printed then photocopied onto regular bond paper.
The McDowell House was built in 1787, and is one of the oldest surviving frame houses in western North Carolina. Along with the nearby Carson House, it is an important piece of McDowell County history, and is currently in the process of major restoration.
