The Dallas Art Institute (1926-1946) was the first art school to offer instruction in a variety of fields in the southern United States.It was founded in 1926 by artists Olin H. Travis and Kathryne Hail Travis and operated until it was closed by the Dallas Museum of Art trustees in 1946.

Olin H. Travis was born on November 15, 1888, in Dallas, Texas, the second of six children born to Olin Few Travis and Eulalia Moncrief Travis. [1] He grew up with some familiarity with the arts as his father worked as a printer, and his next-door neighbor was noted sculptor Clyde Giltner Chandler. [2]

Brettell moved to Dallas in 1988 to become the Director of the Dallas Museum of Art, a position he held until 1992. He would later join the faculty of the University of Texas at Dallas, where he served as Margaret M. McDermott Distinguished Chair of Art and Aesthetic Studies and inaugural director of the Edith O'Donnell Institute of Art History.
