A mechanical pencil or clutch pencil is a pencil with a replaceable and mechanically extendable solid pigment core called a "lead" / ˈ l ɛ d /. The lead , often made of graphite , is not bonded to the outer casing, and the user can mechanically extend it as its point is worn away from use.
The marker is a felt-tipped pen with quick–drying water–based ink. [5] In 1979, Paper Mate introduced the Eraser Mate or Erasermate brand. [6] In the 1980s, Paper Mate invented the Replay 2000 pen, with erasable ink and a rubber at one end. In 2010, Paper Mate introduced "environmentally friendly" biodegradable pens, pencils and erasers. [7]

Typically the eraser is a pen-shaped device with a replaceable insert with glass fibers, which wear down in use. The fibers are very hard; in addition to removing pencil and pen markings, such erasers are used for cleaning traces on electronic circuit boards to facilitate soldering, removing rust, and many other applications.
The erasers (sometimes replaced by a sharpener on pencils with larger lead sizes) are also removable (and thus replaceable), and usually cover a place to store replacement leads. Mechanical pencils are popular for their longevity and the fact that they may never need sharpening.
A disposable version called Erasermate 2 was subsequently introduced, with an appearance similar to the non-erasable Write Bros. stick pen, except for a slightly larger girth, and of course the black eraser, affixed to the pen's cap. The eraser, similar to that of a standard no. 2 pencil, was about 5 mm in diameter, and 10 mm in length.
