Thoại Sơn is a rural district (huyện) of An Giang province in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. In 2019 the district had a population of 163,427. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] The district covers an area of 456 km².
In 1861, the French colonial government established Côn Đảo Prison on the island to house political prisoners. In 1954, it was turned over to the South Vietnamese government, who continued to use it for the same purpose. Notable prisoners held at Côn Sơn in the 1930s included Phạm Văn Đồng, Nguyễn An Ninh and Lê Đức Thọ. [1]
Koh Rong was established as a commune in 2000, and became a city in 2019. It is the site of a 99-year land concession by The Royal Group to develop the island, and is one of the islands within the Koh Rong Marine National Park that was established in 2018.
