Prowers County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 census, the population was 11,999. [1] The county seat is Lamar. [2] The county is named in honor of John Wesley Prowers, a leading pioneer in the lower Arkansas River valley region.
The Prowers County Building, at 301 S. Main St. in Lamar, Colorado, was built in 1928. It was a work of Robert K. Fuller and of A.E.Danielson & Sons in Classical Revival style. It served as a courthouse and has also been known as Prowers County Courthouse. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. [1]

Lamar is the last eastbound stop of the Lamar-Pueblo-Colorado Springs Outrider line. Highways US 50 is an east–west highway running from California to Maryland. It is also the main route to Pueblo and Las Animas. Prowers County Road 196 (the state has abandoned the highway) is an 11.4-mile (18.3 km) stretch that connects around Lamar to Wiley.
