A few years after signing a deal with the fledgling British Darts Organisation's (BDO) founder Olly Croft in 1973 which made H.A. Kicks dartboards the official boards of the organisation, Kicks changed the name of the company to Winmau. The new name came from the first three letters of Kicks' wife's first names, Winifred Maud.
The Winmau BDO 9-Dart Club was an initiative launched and partnered by the British Darts Organisation and long-term sponsor Winmau in January 2013, [1] [2] which celebrated the 40th anniversary of the British Darts Organisation, [1] [2] with membership restricted to darts players that achieve a nine-dart finish at BDO / WDF major and open events.
It is one of the longest-running and most prestigious of the BDO/WDF tournaments. The tournament was originally sponsored by Phonogram before changing its sponsor in 1975 to darts board manufacturer, Winmau. The World Masters was originally contested as the best of 5 legs (first to 3) before later transitioning to the set format.

The BDO awards points depending on player's performances within each of its events. Twenty-seven points are awarded to the champion of each its three Major Events – The Lakeside World Professional Championship , The Bavaria World Darts Trophy and the Winmau World Masters .
The 2018 Winmau World Masters was a major tournament on the BDO/WDF calendar for 2018. It took place from 3–7 October at the Bridlington Spa Hall, which hosted the stage element of the event for the second time since 2009.
