This historic district encompasses 719 contributing buildings that are located in the central business district and surrounding residential areas of Milton. The buildings mostly date from the 1880s to the early twentieth century; older buildings were largely lost due to a fire in 1880 and floods in 1972 and 1977.
Milton is a borough in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States, on the West Branch Susquehanna River, 50 miles (80 km) north of Harrisburg, located in Central Pennsylvania's Susquehanna River Valley. It is approximately 10 miles upriver from the mouth of the West Branch Susquehanna River and about 30 miles downriver of Williamsport.
The Milton Section was built between 1829 and 1830, as part of the West Branch Division of the Pennsylvania Canal.
