NC 89 is an original North Carolina state highway, established in 1921 by the North Carolina State Highway Commission. [2] The highway began at NC 80 in Mount Airy and ran east to Francisco where it intersected NC 661. The highway then turned southeast, travelled through Danbury and Walnut Cove, before ending at NC 897 in Walkertown.
Westbound lanes of NC 81, however, are routed for 0.1 miles (0.16 km) via Bryson Street, which intersects Biltmore Avenue one block north of Swannanoa River Road. After 1.6 miles (2.6 km) NC 81 intersects US 74A (South Tunnel Road) near the Asheville Mall.

North Carolina Highway 691 (NC 691) was established in 1925 as a new primary routing between NC 69, in Ingalls, to NC 194, near Linville Falls. In 1926, NC 691 was truncated further north from Linville Falls, at the east end of Three Mile Highway; the old alignment replaced by NC 194.
