Cyrano de Bergerac is one of the two plays "performed" in the 1995 comedic play Moon Over Buffalo by Ken Ludwig, the other being Private Lives. In the 2005 American drama film Bigger Than the Sky , a man auditions for a local community theater production of the play, and the plot plays out with it as the background theme.

Cyrano's short life is poorly documented. Certain significant chapters of his life are known only from the Preface to the Histoire Comique par Monsieur de Cyrano Bergerac, Contenant les Estats & Empires de la Lune (Comical History of the States and Empires of the Moon) published in 1657, nearly two years after his death. Disillusion and how to overcome it is also a personal theme. Rostand wrote the play for Benoît-Constant Coquelin, known as "Coq" (the French word for a cockerel/rooster), who had created the role of Cyrano de Bergerac in 1897. But Coquelin died of a heart attack in 1909 (clutching, it was said, a copy of the script of Chantecler).
The new “Cyrano” movie is an eyeful; but for the ear, more like half-full. But you always take your chances with a musical adaptation of the 1897 Edmond Rostand play. And there have been plenty.
