The parameter must be named |1= if its value contains a = character. You may substitute this template—that is, if this template is used as {}, the resulting wikicode is "clean".
Gives the resultant <count> of characters creating a substring of characters from the start of the trimmed string (i.e. the substring returned will have length <count>, exclusive of leading whitespace characters, which are trimmed first before <count> is invoked). If <count> is invalid, empty or zero, an empty string is returned.
The Scheme and Erlang implementations are similar but differ in several ways. JavaScript differs also in that it cuts, it does not put the rest of the string into the last element. See the example here. The Cobra implementation will default to whitespace. Opposite of join.

Base 1: the first character is numbered 1, and so on. Any leading or trailing whitespace is removed from the string before searching. If the requested position is negative, this function will search the string counting from the last character. In other words, number = -1 is the same as asking for the last character of the string.
