A zone valve is a specific type of valve used to control the flow of water or steam in a hydronic heating or cooling system. In the interest of improving efficiency and occupant comfort, such systems are commonly divided up into multiple zones. [ 1 ]
In general, valves nearest to the boiler should vent the slowest, and valves furthest from the boiler should vent the fastest. [citation needed] Ideally, steam should reach each valve and close each and every valve at the same time, so that the system can work at maximal efficiency; this condition is known as a "balanced" system. The reversing valve, controlled by the thermostat, causes the change-over from heat to cool. Residential heat pump thermostats generally have an "O" terminal to energize the reversing valve in cooling. Some residential and many commercial heat pump thermostats use a "B" terminal to energize the reversing valve in heating.
This allows a more granular application of heat, similar to non-central heating systems. Zones are controlled by multiple thermostats.
