Admission to the program is through a competitive, two-stage application process. Northwestern's CVPA program operates as a "school-within-a-school" model, similar to a program that has been in existence at Suitland High School since 1986. In September 2010, PGCPS officially held a ground-breaking ceremony for a new Greenbelt Middle School. The new school will be the third LEED-certified "green building" in Prince George's County, and have a capacity of 990 students. Greenbelt Middle School was scheduled to open in the fall of 2012.
