Dr. Boyer (ボイラー, Boirā) is a surgeon at Kuta Baro Hospital. He and another doctor were to join Tenma for Mayor Roedecker's surgery. After Tenma operates on Johan Liebert instead, Dr. Boyer scolds Tenma for inadvertently causing Roedecker's death and stated that the doctors had to scramble to cover for him at the last minute.
Dr. Kenzo Tenma is a young Japanese brain surgeon, working at Eisler Memorial Hospital in Düsseldorf, West Germany. Tenma is dissatisfied with the political bias of the hospital in treating patients, and seizes the chance to change things after a massacre brings fraternal twins Johan and Anna Liebert into the hospital.
Tenma treats a local drunk after an accident, and then assists Dr. Schumann, the local doctor in treating the village residents. He visits an elderly woman who refuses to have herself examined when Tenma realizes that the woman has a subarachnoid hemorrhage he performs an impromptu operation to save her.

Dr. Ochanomizu tells the whole secret of Atom's birth. It was the fact that Atom's birth father was actually Dr. Tenma, who had created him as a replacement for his son, Tobio, and then abandoned him. Atom is deeply hurt and troubled. At the same time, Atlas, who was defeated by Atom, is regenerated by Dr. Tenma with even more power.
Once completed, he calls the robot Tobio (Astro Boy), after his deceased son. However, Astro Boy's inability to control his own strength begins to infuriate Dr. Tenma, and while on a cruise, Dr. Tenma angrily disowns the robot. Dr. Tenma is last seen mournfully calling out for Tobio, and is not seen through the remainder of the series. [14]
