Ellsworth is a city in and the county seat of Ellsworth County, Kansas, United States. [1] As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 3,066. [4] Known as a cow town in the 1870s, when the Kansas Pacific Railroad operated a stockyard here for shipping cattle to eastern markets, in the 21st century, it serves as the trading center of the rural county.
The Ellsworth Downtown Historic District is a historic district which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. [ 1 ] The district is a 30 acres (12 ha) area generally including blocks between N. Main & 3rd Sts. from Lincoln to Kansas Avenues, plus the west side of Kansas Ave.
The house is located 0.25 miles (0.40 km) south of Ellsworth, across Smoky Hill River, off what was State Highway K-45 in 1974. Its address is now 1126 Highway 14, Ellsworth, KS 67439. [3] The city of Ellsworth has apparently annexed land to its south, extending to the house's property and jumping over it.
Ellsworth Township covers an area of 34.22 square miles (88.6 km 2) and contains two incorporated settlements: Ellsworth (the county seat) and Kanopolis. According to the USGS, it contains one cemetery, Memorial. The streams of East Oak Creek, East Spring Creek, Oak Creek, Oxide Creek, Spring Creek and West Oak Creek run through this township.
