The district is administered by a District Secretariat headed by a District Secretary (previously known as a Government Agent) appointed by the central government of Sri Lanka. The capital of the district is the city of Polonnaruwa .
The district is conterminous with the administrative district of Polonnaruwa in the North Central province. The district currently elects 5 of the 225 members of the Sri Lankan Parliament and had 280,337 registered electors in 2010. [2] The district is Sri Lanka's Electorate Number 18. [4]

It is the largest province by area, covering 16% of the total land area of Sri Lanka. The province consists two districts, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura; the Anuradhapura district is the largest district in Sri Lanka by area. The province has a semi-arid climate and most forests situated in the province are Sri Lankan dry-zone dry evergreen forests.
The largest school in the district, Polonnaruwa Royal Central College is situated in the new town. Polonnaruwa is the second largest city in North Central Province , but it is known as one of the cleanest and more beautiful cities in the country.
The newest district to be created was the Kilinochchi district in February 1984, [22] and the current constitution states that the territory of Sri Lanka consists of 25 administrative districts. These districts may be subdivided or amalgamated by a resolution of the Parliament of Sri Lanka .
They were formerly known as D.R.O. divisions, after the divisional revenue officer. Later the D.R.O.s became assistant government agents and the givisions were known as A.G.A. divisions.
