Padayappa was released theatrically on 10 April 1999 on the eve of Tamil New Year's Day. [15] It was the first Tamil film to be released worldwide with over 200 prints, and 700,000 audio cassettes. [ 47 ] [ 48 ] The film's rights in Japan were sold for US$50,000, which was the highest an Indian film fetched for commercial release in 1999.
The film ran for 175 days in theatres, and won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Third Best Film. Sridhar later remade the film in Telugu as Vayasu Pilichindi the same year, with the main cast reprising their roles, and in Hindi as Dil-e-Nadaan (1982).
