John Fire Lame Deer (in Lakota Tȟáȟča Hušté; March 17, 1903 [1] – December 14, 1976, [2] also known as Lame Deer, John Fire and John (Fire) Lame Deer) was a Lakota holy man, member of the Heyoka society, [citation needed] grandson of the Miniconjou head man Lame Deer, and father of Archie Fire Lame Deer.
Vision Quest is a young adult novel by Terry Davis, published in 1979. [1] In first-person, present-tense narrative, it tells the story of a few months in the life of Louden Swain, a high school wrestler in Spokane, Washington who is cutting weight and working toward the state championships.
Davis, who has been a high school English teacher and a wrestling coach, is the author of three novels for young adults: Vision Quest (1979), Mysterious Ways (1984), and If Rock & Roll Were a Machine (1992). He has also written Presenting Chris Crutcher, a biography of the respected young-adult author.
On July 12, 1980, Lame Deer was in the process of conducting a vision quest ceremony for two men, one of whom, Ronald Delgado, was a diabetic. Delgado died during the four-day ceremony. Lame Deer was promptly denounced as a "known fraud" and a "twinkie" (New Age practitioner) by a few Native American activists and by some white New Age groups.
