The kaluga (Huso dauricus), also known as the river beluga, is a large predatory sturgeon found in the Amur River basin from Russia to China and near Hokkaido in Japan. [1] With a maximum size of at least 1,000 kg (2,205 lb) and 5.6 m (18 ft), the kaluga is one of the biggest of the sturgeon family.
The shovelnose sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus platorynchus) [5] is the smallest species of freshwater sturgeon native to North America. It is often called hackleback , sand sturgeon , or switchtail . Switchtail refers to the long filament found on the upper lobe of the caudal fin (often broken off as adults).
Beluga of such great sizes are very old (continuing to grow throughout life) and have become increasingly rare in recent decades because of heavy fishing of the species. Today, mature belugas that are caught are generally 142–328 cm (4 ft 8 in – 10 ft 9 in) long and weigh 19–264 kg (42–582 lb).
