Norwich (/ ˈ n ɔːr w ɪ tʃ / NOR-wich) (also called "The Rose of New England") is a city in New London County, Connecticut, United States.The Yantic, Shetucket, and Quinebaug Rivers flow into the city and form its harbor, from which the Thames River flows south to Long Island Sound.
Route 169 is a 47.36-mile-long (76.22 km) state highway in the U.S. states of Connecticut and Massachusetts.It begins in the city of Norwich, Connecticut, and runs 38 miles (61 km) through Northeastern Connecticut, continuing across the state line into Southbridge, Massachusetts.
It travelled along present-day Route 32 (along the west bank of the Thames River) from New London to Norwich, Connecticut. In 1932, when Connecticut decommissioned its New England Routes, Route 12 swapped places with Route 32 south of Norwich. From Norwich to the Massachusetts border, Route 12 still follows its 1920s alignment.
Modern Route 82 east of Route 85 was built along the alignment of an early toll road known as the Salem and Norwich Turnpike, which was chartered in 1827 to connect its namesake cities. The toll road was extended west to the village of Hadlyme in 1834 by another turnpike corporation, which built the Hadlyme and Salem Turnpike .
The north and south ends were also realigned in 1932. In the south, the original New England Route 32 ran along present day Route 12 from Groton to Norwich. The modern alignment from New London to Norwich used to be part of New England Route 12. (Route 12 and Route 32 have basically swapped places south of Norwich).
Route 87 begins as Norwich-Lebanon Road at an intersection with Route 32 in the southeast corner of the town of Franklin, just northwest of the Yantic neighborhood of Norwich. It heads northwest across the Susquetonscut Brook and railroad tracks, briefly crossing into Bozrah (for 0.18 miles), before re-entering Franklin.
